'Spergy' Chess Set

The concrete used to create this exciting and technically advanced chess set was developed according to a precise recipe using sieved and graded granite from a quarry in the Midlands region of England. The mixture is bound with a fully recyclable and eco-friendly resin, which adds strength and enables precise detailing. Each of the chess pieces and playing squares is poured, cut, and assembled by hand, with the playing squares affixed to the wooden baseboard, creating a slight step feature. The board itself is made from fine-grade Birchwood Ply, a hardwood species native to Europe that is abundant, replanted, and fast-growing, thereby maintaining a balance with the environment when harvested. The chessboard measures 41cm x 41cm and features a stainless-steel plaque inlaid on the reverse, engraved with both the Daniel Caesar and Purling logos, along with a unique serial number. The chess pieces vary in size, ranging between 4cm and 8cm. Each set is truly unique and designed to reflect the inherent properties and beauty found in natural products, accentuating the raw and the refined aspects seen in industrial architectural design, including notches, air bubbles, coarse and smooth finishes, with colouration intended to evolve over time with use.
