The solid surround frame is also hewn from English Walnut and inlaid into the centre sides of the playing blocks, providing an innovative opening at the base, to allow the solid timbers to breathe, expand and contract, accommodating the differing and changing climate conditions a Purling set may find itself in across the globe. The total board measures 53cm x 53cm and creates a slight "floating" illusion. Chess pieces - Modelled on Purling's Heritage and Bold series of traditionally inspired Staunton designs and featuring our unique Knight design, the pieces are hand cast in England in brass and polished to a high level to deliver an incredibly smooth finish. One playing side is plated in Black Rhodium and the opposing side in Silver Rhodium, for a deeply satisfying weighted hand and visual appeal. (Rhodium is a member of the Platinum group of metals, underpinning our dedication to the reign of Her Majesty).
